Kate Stickley
Responsible Business Engagement Manager at St. James's Place
About
Bio: Kate recently joined the Inclusion & Diversity team at St. James's Place, and has a keen interest in I&D. Kate is a strong advocate for inclusion practices, and focuses on educating others around language, and how its use can affect people's sense of safety and wellbeing.
Kate has seen the importance of inclusion through her own experiences. As a deaf person, Kate has seen people change the way they interact with her. However, Kate also realised that her differences can be a strength, and gave her unique skills around understanding emotional cues and body language. As a result, she doesn't want others to feel excluded just for their differences.
At SJP, Kate has seen amazing progress in developing the I&D agenda. SJP celebrated Pride for the first time in 2019, and this was monumental in signposting the organisation's commitment to inclusion. The buy-in from senior leaders has also been extremely valuable in developing inclusion.
Kate comments: "Through engaging in projects like LGBT Great's Project 1000, we can better influence change. It can often feel daunting, and you might not get it right the first time, but the key is to take the first step - we're all still learning.
For someone to feel like they can't bring their full-selves to work is just not right. Through our actions, we can make sure that we develop a better working environment for everyone."
